Commuting appears repeatedly in wellbeing research as an activity people rate poorly, often below tasks they describe as unpleasant. The features responsible are specific and not simply a matter of lost time.

Effort without output

A commute requires sustained attention, particularly when driving, and attention spent is not recovered by the fact that the destination was reached.

Unlike most demanding activity, it produces nothing that accumulates, so the effort leaves no visible result to weigh against it.

That absence of output is part of why commuting is experienced as loss rather than as work, even when it is genuinely effortful.

Control is unusually low

A delayed train or a blocked road cannot be acted on, and the traveller is left holding a demand with no available response.

The stress literature identifies exactly that combination, high demand with no discretion, as the one most reliably associated with strain.

Which explains the common finding that drivers in congestion report more strain than drivers covering a longer distance freely, despite the shorter distance.

Unpredictability compounds the effect

An unreliable journey has to be planned around its worst case, so the traveller pays the cost of the longest version every day whether it occurs or not.

Variability also means arrival time cannot be relied on, which pushes uncertainty into everything scheduled at either end.

Studies comparing journeys generally find that variance in duration matters as much as the mean, which is not how commuting is usually discussed.

The boundary function is real

A commute also does something useful, since the interval between work and home allows a shift in role that abrupt transitions do not.

People working from home frequently report a version of this by inventing a walk before and after the day, which recreates the interval without the journey.

The distinction is between the transition, which people value, and the constraint, which they do not, and the two arrive bundled together in an ordinary commute.

Why the trade-off is misjudged in advance

Housing decisions frequently trade a longer commute for a larger home, and satisfaction with the home tends to be predicted better than dissatisfaction with the journey.

Adaptation is the reason: people habituate to a larger space fairly quickly, while a variable and uncontrollable journey resists habituation because it is different each time.

The practical implication is that reliability deserves more weight than duration when comparing options, since a predictable long journey is easier to absorb than an erratic short one.
